Studio 89 Cafe - Rockin' The Jailhouse

reported by Gareth 3rd Oct 2008

Studio 89 Cafe

Studio 89 Cafe, A great Rock 'n' Roll venue in Adelaide

Let's suppose you are an avid rock 'n' roller, an Elvis impersonator, and you want to establish a bistro cum rock 'n' roll joint. What type of building would you choose?

An old jailhouse seems the obvious choice. That's exactly what Roman Wozniak, proprietor of Adelaide's Studio 89 Café chose. Well, almost! He has converted the old Prospect police station and courthouse into a restaurant-style boogie place where the joint definitely swings when the band begins to jump.

The early twentieth century 'art deco' style building at 89 Prospect Road, Prospect was built as solid as a rock. That's fortunate. It now 'rocks' on a regular basis.

The decor is very different from that of earlier days. Gone are the serious tones of justice in favour of far more colourful nightlife hues. Nowadays you'll witness many dancing couples doing serious justice to the lively tones of rock 'n' roll music. Pretty skirts, glittery belts and fancy shirts are plentiful.

Despite an original "GR" insignia still intact upon dark wood panelling, the portraits on the walls are of a very different kind of 'king'. One far more missed. Long live Elvis!

Where the courtroom audience once listened in awe to the curly spinning, turning and twisting of facts by lawyers on behalf of defendants there is now an awesome display of spinning, twisting and turning by dancers highly charged with a desire to jive.

Behind the 'bench' you'll no longer find a bewigged, bespectacled judge gravely serving the will of His Majesty but rather a pretty waitress or two serving alcoholic beverages with a smile. There's not much danger here, though. You'll struggle to find any 'drunk and disorderlies' among the current regulars at this old lock-up. And that, in a nutshell, is why so many other hotel and bar operators don't want us. We don't spend up big on booze!

In the old 'cop shop' dining tables graced with impressive meals now stand in place of desks at which cluey detectives once sat making a meal out of artless fibbers. Strong lights have been dimmed for atmosphere and the 'heat' is now applied only in the kitchen, which is open each night for diners.

Small entry charges are made to cover band costs, but are sometimes waived for diners depending on the events held.

Ace Adelaide duo The Party Cats, comprising former Masters Apprentices guitarist Peter Tilbrook and Brian "Davo" Davoren play at Studio 89 Cafe every Wednesday night, drawing good crowds.

Roman makes regular guest appearances as The King, resplendent in costume, belting out realistic renditions of Elvis songs.

At a time when rock 'n' rollers are being squeezed out left, right and centre we are very grateful to Roman for creating this wonderful venue. Hope to see you there next time you're in Adelaide.
